2. Tank inspection failure

1) Water remaining in cargo lines or cargo tanks.
2) Sweat in cargo tank due to cold ballast,/ diff temperature
3) Residues of previous cargo at heating coil,
4) Smell of previous cargo
5)Foreign matters(coating fragments,rags, dusts).
6) Bad coating condition
8) Leakage of heating coil.
9) Leakage of hydraulic oil
10)Improper cleaning of cargo tanks up to required level by lack of
knowledge,experience
11)Improper inspection of tank and its outfitting by the responsible
officer.
12)Ignorance of inspection specification and requirements for the next
cargo due to lack of information from the operator.

7. Tank Cleaning Pump & line

Tank Cleaning Pump & line
There are two (2)
types of tank
cleaning pump
electric motor driven
pump (can not
adjust pressure)
hydraulic motor
driven pump that
can control pressure
of pump by control
knob.

8. Pressure of tank cleaning machine

Low water pressure is used for volatile cargo, or
preventing damage of coating in case of aggressive
cargo.
High water pressure is used for non-volatile cargo,
high viscosity cargo or vegetable & animal oil.

10. Tank cleaning methods

Butterworthing (COLD&HOT)
Spraying of cleaning medium (usually sea or fresh
water) onto the tank surface by means of a
cleaning machine but without addition of any
cleaning agent.
At least one full cycle of the cleaning machine
should be allowed for sufficient cleaning.
Additional cycles might be necessary depending
on the degree of difficulty of the cleaning operation.
Soe Moe(Chief Officer)

11. Cleaning hardware

Tank Cleaning Machines
The cleaning machine is the most important
equipment and its proper operation is a key
success factor for achieving the desired cleaning
results.
Named "Butterworthing". Arthur Butterworth, in
1920, patented the first Automated Tank
Cleaning Machine and in 1925 the company was
established to produce and market this product.

14. Heater

Heating becomes a critical part of the cleaning
operation.
Experience of the operating personal to set up the
system(recommended temperatures can achieved
The number of machines operated simultaneously
must be reduced to compensate a lack of heating
capacity.

16. Tank Cleaning Water Temperature

Hot
Hot water( more than 60℃ )
Warm

Luke
Luke water( 35℃ ~ 40℃ )
Cold

Cold water( 20℃ ~ 30℃ )

17. Recirculation tank cleaning

Prepare a cleaning solution.
Butterworth the tank by internal
recirculation.
The necessary temperature can
be achieved/maintained by
means of heating coils, cargo
heat exchangers or a butterworth
heater.

19. Rinsing

Spraying of water (usually fresh
water) with cleaning machine
onto the tank walls in order to
rinse chloride containing water
and traces of contamination from
the tank surface. Typically it is not
necessary to run a full circle of
the cleaning machine.
Soe Moe(Chief Officer)

21. Vent - Mop - Dry

Ventilation in order to remove
water, moisture and smell.
Usually done by forced air
circulation.
If there are water pools on the
tank bottom they should be
removed with a mop to reduce
drying time.
If the next cargo is sensitive to
water or moisture, drying must
be carried out very carefully.
Soe Moe(Chief Officer)

22. Test of heating coil(Refer to Heating coil test & blow attached)

Test of heating coil(Refer to Heating coil
test & blow attached)
In case of polymerize cargo, heating coil should
be tested by air before start tank cleaning
After completion tank cleaning, heating coil
should be tested Methods of test by
Steam
Air
Water
