southeastern spur of the Donetsk
mountain ridge
It was previously known as
Alexandro-Grushevskaya (until
1867), Gornoye Grushevskoye
Poseleniye (until 1881),
Alexandrovsk-Grushevsky (until
1920).

Monument to Vasily Alexeyev
(2014). Vasily Ivanovich
Alekseyev was a Soviet
weightlifter. He set 80 world
records and 81 Soviet records
in weightlifting and won gold
medals at the 1972, 1972,
1976 Summer Olympics.
Alexeev was born in the city
Shakhty.

At the beginning of the 20th century in
the city of Alexandrovsk-Grushevsky
(now the city of Shakhty in the Rostov
region) there were two functioning
wooden churches - Petropavlovsk and
Alexander-Nevskaya. These churches
were no longer able to provide spiritual
guidance to all parishioners. This was the
reason for the decision of the Don
Religious Consistory to build a new stone
cathedral church in the Church-Market
Square, which was built in 1899.

The memorial complex in the park of culture
and recreation of the city of Shakhty, Rostov
region, was built on the common grave of
soldiers who died during the liberation of the
city during the Great Patriotic War. From July
22, 1942 to February 12, 1943, the town of
Shakhty was occupied by the German-Fascist
army. It was occupied by the German army. In
February 1943, Soviet troops liberated the city
of Shakhty from fascist occupation. Units of the
5th Shock Army (commanded by Colonel
General V. D. Tsvetaev (December 1942 - May
1944) took part in the liberation of the city: 40
Guards, 258 and 315 Rifle Divisions. Many
soldiers of the Soviet Army died during the
liberation of the city. All of them are buried in
the common graves of the city with military
honours.

The monument to the Liberator
Soldier in Shakhty, Rostov Oblast,
was opened on May 7, 1985. The
monument was erected in the city
center on the square of the 40th
anniversary of the Victory on the
initiative of the Chairman of the
Executive Committee Victor
Kovalev. The monument was made
at the Kharkiv sculpture factory of
the art fund of the USSR.
