2. Introduction

The reason I have
decided to investigate
the topic «Subcultures
are also popular in
Russia, as in England» is
that it is interesting
for me first of all. I
have always wanted to
know the reasons for
which the teenagers
become neformals and
how they do differ
from the rest of the
population.
• I think that this theme will
be interesting for everyone
because we need to learn to
understand people who differ
from us, to realize the real
social causes of their
behavior.

3. The main questions

It is considered that England is
the birthplace of subcultures. I
wanted to find out whether
subcultures are popular in Russia
too. Why is it so? Why did some
subcultures gain worldwide
recognition, and others did not?
And, finally, what are the
differences between Russian and
English subcultures? Let’s
answer these questions.

7. What is subculture?

-a group of
individuals that
don’t share
some qualities
that the
majority of
society share,
but the group
has its own
values, beliefs,
norms,
behaviour, etc.
* subcultures offer youth a solution, albeit at a
superficial level, to help solve the collective problems
they experience.
* generating force which provides for a sense of
belonging and identity.

8. Why teenagers become members of an informal social group

Youth subculture helps young people to show their
individuality, to realize their potential and find
their place in life. That is why young people are
looking for people with a similar system of their
own value orientation
But because all young people are different, and
their system of values differs from their parents’
one, it raises a lot of youth subcultures.

25. Conclusion

• I conducted a study and found out that subcultures in
Russia are not as popular as in England. My hypothesis
that subcultures in Russia are popular as well as in
England is confirmed partly. However, researches
showed that there are much more supporters of
various subcultures in England than in Russia.
• My researches have practical value. They can be used
at meetings of Club of virtual travel around the
English-speaking countries, which works in our school
and at English lessons during learning of the theme
“Youth Subcultures’’ in 10-11 grades.
