Backpackers guide to southeast Asia

1. Backpackers guide to southeast Asia

2. First let’s brainstorm!

- Have you ever been to Asia? If yes, where?
- If not, which places would you like to visit?

3. Step 1: Research Events and Climate for the Year depending on the place you want to visit

VS
Monsoon rainy season
The rest of the year

4. Book your tickets independently, decide on the date and how long you plan to travel, most importantly the beginning and the end

of your trip.
You don’t need a travel agent.
Plan the trip yourselves and be
spontaneous

5. Why backpacking, why not just packing up a suitcase?

6. This is one of the reasons?

You’ve got bloody suitcase on wheels. Real men don’t get the earth to
help carry their luggage mate. They carry it themselves.

7. Advantages of backpacking:

1.No need to check in your luggage when
taking flights
2.You are more mobile than with a suitcase
especially in those parts where the roads
are not paved.
3.The backpack keeps you from overpacking.

8. Get your backpack and get ready to travel light

- Pack some T-shirts, shorts, a hat, a pair
of shoes and a pair of flip-flops, things
that you can handwash in case of
emergency.
- One pair of pants and one sweater is
good to have when you’re on a plane.
- Don’t forget your swimsuit.

9. Weigh your luggage.

- Weigh your luggage before
the trip. Most airlines in
Asia allow up to 7kg of
hand luggage (sometimes
10kg)

10. Go easy on cosmetics

• Bring the minimum amount of hygiene and cosmetic products in
small bottles up to 50ml. You can buy most of the things you
need when you get to your destination.

11. Don’t rely too much on your booking.

-Be ready for surprises such as the room you booked isn’t available
or that the room looks much worse than the picture.
-If you’re staying in a hostel try to respect the rules of the hostel
and be tolerant to other guests. I suggest getting some earplugs and
eye mask if you wanna get some sleep.
Share your experience

12. Food can be rather risky, but it’s worthwhile

- Start taking some probiotics a couple of days before the trip. It’s easy to get
some stomach problems and diarrhea so it’s always good to have some pills on you
in case you need to calm your upset stomach.
- If you are familiar with Asian food in European restaurants get ready for a
surprise.
- I hope you like spicy food.

13. Food can be rather risky, but it’s worthwhile

tom yum
pad thai
Nasi goreng
Grilled insects
Pho soup
Nasi lemak
Grilled seafood

14. Renting a scooter

Scooters are everywhere in southeast Asia and they are cheap to rent. It’s a really fun
and convenient way to explore the place.
On the other hand it can be quite dangerous since a lot of tourists who have never ridden
a scooter before do it for the first time and they are an accident just waiting to happen.
Don’t be surprised to see people with a broken arm or a leg. Also all the locals use them
and the roads are crowded.
