Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are
made in many other materials. Tartan is particularly
associated with Scotland. Scottish kilts almost always
have tartan patterns. Today tartan is generally used to
describe the pattern, not limited to textiles.In America
the term plaid is commonly used to describe tartan.

7. SIR WILLIAM WALLACE

• Sir William Wallace (died 23 August 1305)
was a Scottish knight and landowner who
became one of the main leaders during
the Wars of Scottish independence. Along
with Andrew Moray, Wallace defeated an
English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in
1297, and was Guardian of Scotland, serving
until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk. In
1305,Wallace was captured in
Robroyston near Glasgow and handed over
to King Edward I of England, who had
him hanged, drawn and quartered for high
treason.
• The best known depiction of Wallace is in
the Academy Award winning epic film
Braveheart , which was directed by Mel
Gibson.

Glasgow is the largest city and the third most
important city of Great Britain.
Edimburgh is the seat of the Scottish
Parliament. The city was one of the major
centres of the Enlightenment, led by
the University of Edimburgh, earning it the
nickname Athens of the North.

• The Loch Ness Monster, more oftenly called Nessie, is
a supposed animal said to live in the Scottish loch
of Loch Ness, the second biggest loch in the country.
Most scientists believe that the Loch Ness Monster is
not real, and they say that many of the seeings are
either hoaxes or pictures of other mistaken existing
animals. However, a popular theory among believers is
that "Nessie" is a plesiosaur, an extinct meat-eating
aquatic reptile that lived in the Mesozoic era. The Loch
Ness monster has also been described as an elephant,
eel, and other creatures.
