UNICEF in Ukraine
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) opened its office in Kyiv in 1997. Over the years,
UNICEF has supported the Government of Ukraine with nearly US$130 million of aid to develop
health, water and sanitation, education and protection programmes for children.
Since the beginning of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, UNICEF works to fulfill the core
commitments for children in humanitarian action, including access to education, psychosocial
support, water and sanitation, mine risk education, maternal and child health and HIV and AIDS
services.
The main goals of the UNICEF country programme (2018-2022) are:
to contribute to the progressive realization of the rights of all children in Ukraine;
to reduce equity gaps;
maintain a balance between humanitarian, recovery and development interventions;
incorporate conflict-supportive programming; and
build peace in the framework of on-going key reforms in social sectors and decentralization.
