Hero Fortress Brest
Of all the cities of the
Soviet Union, it was Brest
that fell the first to face the
aggression of the Nazi
invaders. In the early
morning of June 22, 1941,
the Brest Fortress was
attacked by enemy forces,
in which at that time there
were approximately 7
thousand Soviet soldiers
and members of the
families of their
commanders.

Hero City Brest
The German command
hoped to seize the fortress
within a few hours, but the
45th Wehrmacht division
was stuck in Brest for a week
and, with significant losses,
suppressed individual centers
of resistance of the heroes of
the defenders of Brest for
another month. As a result,
the Brest Fortress became a
symbol of courage, heroic
stamina and valor from the
time of World War II.

Brest Fortress
An unexpected artillery attack did not allow the heroic
defenders of the fortress to provide coordinated resistance,
so it was divided into several foci. The strongest rebuff to
the enemy was given by the heroes of the Kobrin and Volyn
fortifications, where soldiers fought with the Germans even
in bayonet attacks. According to eyewitnesses of those
days, single shooting from the Brest fortress was heard
until the beginning of August, but, in the end, the resistance
was suppressed and about 5-6 thousand Soviet soldiers
were captured.

Hero City Brest
During the occupation, Brest became part of the
Reich of the Commissariat of Ukraine. The fascists
destroyed 40,000 civilians in the city and completely
destroyed its economy. The city of Brest, including the
famous fortress, met its heroes - liberators on July 28,
1944, when the troops of the 1st Belorussian Front
entered the city.

Brest Fortress
On May 8, 1965, the fortress
received the title "Hero
Fortress". In 1971, the fortress the hero "Brest" became a
memorial complex. The main
entrance to the Brest Fortress is
visible from afar - this is a
massive composition of
reinforced concrete in the form
of a huge banner with a star
carved in concrete.

Terespol Gate
The Terespol Gate was
the first to receive the main
blow from the Germans
from the south-west. The
gate building, which
resembled the architecture
of the Kholm Gate, had a
tower in which families of
border guards lived wives, children, and there
was a water supply from
the bank of the river.

Monument to the heroes of the border
guards at the Terespol gate
In 2011, a monument
was erected across the
border guards and their
families across from the
Terespol Gate. Sculpted
in bronze and made of
granite conveys the
tragic atmosphere of
those days.

Monument to the heroes of the border
guards at the Terespol gate
Border guards marching into
an open attack, behind a stylized
wall of fortifications, a mother
with a child and a woman
giving a little water to a
wounded soldier, is symbolic of
a helmet. They all froze in a
single impulse not to miss the
enemy, not to give him the
opportunity to cross the lines
marked by the border post with
the emblem of the USSR.

"Bayonet" of the Brest Fortress,
installed in the center of the citadel.
The center of the Brest Fortress is
marked by a majestic, 100-meter
obelisk, soaring high in the skies.
The monument is dedicated to the
defenders of the fortress, a stele in
the form of a bayonet. Below under
the obelisk is a mass grave to the
defenders of the fortress. A symbol
of heroic events - the Bayonet
obelisk sparkles in the sun with
titanium faces - this composition,
unique in scale and work, was
established in 1971.
