The PT-23 IPC is a three-stage solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile with an individually
targetable reentry vehicle and ten warheads.
The missile has three stages plus a warhead stage. The first, second and third stages have a onepiece "cocoon" body made of composite material. The first stage is equipped with a solid propellant
engine with a central stationary partially recessed nozzle. The second and third stages also have
solid propellant propulsion systems, the nozzle is central fixed and sliding. The control of the first
stage is carried out by blowing hot gases into the central part of the nozzle of the propulsion system,
the second and third stages are controlled by the deflection of the head part and partially by
aerodynamic elevators mounted on the nose cone. The missile is aimed using a ground-based
gyrocompass and electro-optical means of transmitting the base direction to the onboard gyrostabilized platform.
Missiles can be launched from any point along the railway route. To do this, the train stops, a
special device is retracted to the side of the suspension. The launch container rises to a vertical
position. Then the rocket is launched. Already in the air, the rocket is tilted with the help of a powder
accelerator, and only after that the main engine is started.
The mine version of the rocket differed slightly from the railway version. Firstly, a new engine of
the 1st stage. In the new one, a higher energy fuel was used, traction characteristics were boosted
by 30%. Secondly, as a control element for the thrust vector of the first stage, a central swinging
control nozzle partially recessed into the combustion chamber is used. The rotary part is connected
to the fixed part by means of an elastic support hinge. The first step turned out to be somewhat
shorter and easier. The nose fairing of the rocket had a constant
geometry (against folding nose cone).
