2. HISTORY

Petrozavodsk is the
capital of Republic of
Karelia. It is situated
on the shore of lake
Onego. Petrozavodsk
was founded in 1703
by Peter 1st during the
Great North War.

I guess you are hungry, so let’s visit our
restaurant of traditional Karelian cuisine!
When you enter the restaurant you can
see traditional Karelian interior. Now, let’s
try traditional dishes.
First course is soup “lohikkeito” with
salmon and milk cream.
Second course is moose meat with
mashed potatoes and “maitokalakkeito”
– fish in milk. Oh! I see you are thirsty!
Drink cranberry juice.

4. TRADITIONAL PASTRIES

Now let’s try traditional
pastries. Here is pastry with
mashed potatoes or millet, it
is called “kalitki”, “sulchiny”or
pancakes stuffed with rice
porridge, fish pie and pastry
with sugar which is called
“sweet scanci”. Let’s have a
drink! Usually it is herbal tea
with forest berries.

5. PLACES OF INTEREST

The first thing you should see
when you are in Petrozavodsk
is a monument to Peter the
Great. It is on the embankment
which is also one of the sights.
There are a lot of sculptures
which are presents from twin
cities of Petrozavodsk. By the
way, you can go to Kizhi on a
ship from the water station
near the embankment. Kizhi is
an island in lake Onego which
is famous for its wooden
ensemble of churches built
without any nail. Let’s go
further and see city park. In
1703 Peter 1st ordered to plant
there karelian birches and now
there are a lot of these
beautiful trees.

HISTORICAL QUARTER
Not far from the park there is Alexander Nevskiy Cathedral built by
an Italian architecture. It’s so gorgeous! Now let’s see governor’s
garden named in honor of Karelian governor Gavriil Derzhavin.
Then we go to Lenin’s square and see grandiose monument to
Lenin. Now let’s go to the historical quarter and see traditional
Karelian houses. Our next stop is the railway station. It gives a start
to Lenin Avenue which is the main street of the city.

7. THEATERS, MUSEUMS, ART GALLERIES

Now, let’s visit our
theaters, museums and
art galleries.
There are three theaters
at Kirov’s square: the
Musical theater, the
National theater of
Karelia and the Puppet
theater. There is also the
national art gallery, the
Cantele house and the
museum of Karelian art at
Kirov’s square.

8. MUSEUMS

At Lenin’s square there is the National museum of Republic of Karelia. Nearby is the museum of
history of Petrozavodsk and the museum of Kizhi.

9. TRADITIONAL KARELIAN SOUVENIRS

So, our excursion is coming to its
end and it’s time for souvenirs!
The first place of traditional Karelian
souvenirs takes cloudberry, it is a
royal berry and all Russian rulers
liked it very much. Next place takes
Karelian salmon, honey and willowherb. You can also bring products
from Karelian birch bark. However,
the most impressive present is
Karelian embroidery which is
famous for its colors and technique.
The main colors are write and red
and all embroidery looks amazing.
