WFPis the food-assistance branch of the united
nations.
It’s
world largest humanitarian organization
addressing hunger and promoting food security.
It’s a member of the United Nations Development
Group and part of its executive committee.
It’s governed by an executive board which consist of
representatives from 36 member states.
3. WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME
It’svision a “world in which every man, woman and
child has access at all times to the food needed for an
active and healthy life.”
The WFP works to help people who cannot produce
or obtain enough food for themselves and their
families.
WFP
food
aid
is
also
directed
to
fight micronutrient deficiencies, reduce child
mortality, improve maternal health, and combat
disease, including HIV and AIDS.
4. 2.YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT
WFP is establish in 19th December 1961; 58years ago.
Headquarters located in Rome, Italy.
After the 1960 food and agriculture organization
(FAO) conference, when George McGovern
proposed this programme.
Formally WFP established in 1963 by the FAO.
Where necessary, the Logistics Cluster also facilitates
access to common logistics services.

5. YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT
TheWorld Food Programme (WFP) was chosen by
the IASC as the lead agency for the Logistics Cluster.
WFP hosts the Global Logistics Cluster support team
in its headquarters in Rome.
WFP also acts as a ‘provider of last resort’ offering
common logistics services, when critical gaps
hamper the humanitarian response.
6. 3.STRUCTURE
UnitedNations Development Assembly on a 3 year
experimental basis.
In 1965 the programme was extended to a continuing
basis.

the current executive director.
The European Union is a permanent observer in the
WFP and as a donor, participates in the work.
The WFP has a staff of about 18555 people, the
majority of whom work in remote areas.
7. STRUCTURE
TheExecutive Board is WFP's supreme governing
body.
It Comprising 36 States Members of the United
Nations or Member Nations of the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
(FAO).
The Board provides intergovernmental support,
policy direction and supervision of the activities
of WFP.

Operationfunded by voluntary donation from
government of the world, corporations and private
donors.
In 2008-12 voluntary donated around $500 million.
USA is a major donor of WFP with 2 billion US$,
followed by the European commission and Germany.
The Organization’s administrative costs are only six and
half percent- one of the lowest and best among aid
agencies.
In 2016 WFP received from donors in total US$
5,933,529,247.
9. FINANCE
SinceWFP has no independent source of funds, all
donations either in cash or in-kind must be
accompanied by the cash needed to move, manage
and monitor WFP food assistance.
Governments are the principal source of funding for
WFP.
All government support is on an entirely voluntary
basis.
In turn, corporations engage their employees,
customers and other stakeholders in a vital, lifesaving mission.

fragile setting and following emergencies”.

11. GOALS
The WFP striveto eradicate hunger and malnutrition.
With the ultimate goal in mind of eliminating the need
for food aid itself.
Food-for-work programmes help promote environmental
and economic stability and agricultural production.
This response is activated under the following criteria:
1.When human suffering in which domestic governments
do or can not respond to adequately.
2.The United Nations reputation is under scrutiny
3.When there is an obvious need for aid from the WFP
12. 6.ACHIEVEMENTS
In2013, the WFP reached 80.9 million people in 75
countries and provided 3.1 million tones of food.
7.8 million malnourished children received special
nutritional support in 2013, and 18.6 million children
received school meals or take-home rations.
In 2015, the WFP reached 76.7 million people in 81
countries.
In emergencies, more than 50 million people were
reached in order to improve their nutrition and food
security.
13. ACHIEVEMENTS
Schoolmeals were provided to 17.4 million children
helping retain children in schools, supporting
uninterrupted access to education.
The WFP has scaled up its use of cash and vouchers
as food assistance tools.
7.9 million people received assistance through cash or
voucher programmes in 2013.
In the same year, the WFP purchased food in 91
countries; 86% of that food came from developing
countries.
14. 7.DRAWBACKS
Kenyaneconomist James Shikwati said in a 2005
interview with Der Spiegel "aid to Africa does more
harm than good“.
According
to
him,
the
food
aid
increases corruption as local politicians have the
opportunity to steal some of the aid to bribe voters.
For sell the aid in the black markets killing the local
agriculture.
15. DRAWBACKS
WFPanswers too easily to the calls of the corrupted
governments.
The WFP people as an organization "are in the
absurd situation.
On the one hand, being dedicated to the fight against
hunger.
on the other hand, being faced with unemployment
were hunger actually eliminated“.
16. 8.RELATION WITH INDIA
In India, WFP has moved from providing direct food aidto providing technical assistance and capacity building
services to the Government of India.
WFP is focusing on enabling the country’s food-based
social safety nets to function more efficiently and
effectively in providing food to their target population.
Main Location in New Delhi.
The Government of India has undertaken many reforms
of the country’s social safety nets in order to improve
delivery on nutrition and food security targets.
17. RELATION WITH INDIA
Inthe past couple of decades, India has made
tremendous progress as measured by important
indicators of economic growth, poverty reduction,
self-sufficiency in food grains and the adoption.
Despite significant drops in malnutrition rates,
however, the progress has not been adequate for
achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Through this country strategic plan, WFP seeks to
support India in achieving Sustainable Development
Goals 2 and 17 by capitalizing on its investments.
18. COUNTRIES
There are 83 countries where WFP is working.It includes Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, china,
Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka,
Turkey.
There are also like Bhutan, Cambodia, Colombia,
Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines,
Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Uganda, Yemen and
Zimbabwe.
