Tambov is an ancient city founded in 1636 as
an additional military support to the southern
borders of the Moscow state. A wooden
fortress was built with 6-meter walls, fortified
from below by moats with water. Such an
impressive fortification was not in vain,
because in its entire history the Tambov
fortress was able to withstand about a
hundred enemy attacks and was never
captured. And now, after almost 400 years,
Tambov has turned from a mighty fortress into
an inconspicuous town south of Moscow with
a population of about 300 thousand people. A
rare traveler will have an idea to go to Tambov
on a long-awaited vacation. Only in the last
two or three years, the Internet has been filled
with vivid photographs of the restored Tambov
churches, reminding that there is such a city
on the map of Russia, moreover, the whole
Tambov region. The best and most tourist
places in Tambov, attractions, temples,
estates, parks: all this is described in this

Transfiguration Cathedral in Tambov The next
attraction is the Transfiguration Cathedral, which is
the oldest of all Orthodox churches in the Tambov
land. It was founded by Bishop Pitirim in 1694 and
brought up to the first floor. Earlier, at the same
place, two wooden predecessors of 1636 and 1683
were laid, but only the third, stone, was completed
until the end, which has survived to this day.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the construction of the
temple stopped due to changes in the state. Many years
later, the help of Tambov merchants made it possible to
complete the roof of the dome and the internal iconostasis of
the cathedral. The temple became very famous for the
spread of information about miraculous healings that
happened to the parishioners who visited the tomb of Pitirim.
The founder of the cathedral, Bishop Pitirim, was buried in
1698 at the southern wall of the temple.

Until the 19th century, there was a wooden bell tower at the
cathedral. In 1812 the bell tower was rebuilt into a stone one, as the
wooden one had become too dilapidated. In 1930, the bell tower
was dismantled by the decree of the Soviet government. The new
bell tower was rebuilt quite recently, in 2011. Without a doubt, it is
the dominant feature of the Cathedral Square and the entire
architectural ensemble.

The territory of the Transfiguration Cathedral
stretches almost to the banks of the Tsna River,
where the chapel and the source of St. Pitirim are
located. It is not clear what the power line is doing
here.
To the right of the cathedral is the monument to the Bishop
of Tambov - St. Pitirim. The monument was erected in
2014 for the 100th anniversary of the canonization of Saint
Pitirim.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Emperor Nicholas I visited
Tambov and the Transfiguration Cathedral, and also took a direct
part in the canonization of St. Pitirim of Tambov. It was along this
alley that in 1914 the emperor walked from the cathedral to the
Pitirimovsky spring, where he drank water. Since 2016, the path
o the source has been decorated with a bronze bust of Emperor
Nicholas I, canonized.

The first holy water chapel over the source of St. Pitirim was
built in 1914 with a donation from Empress Maria Feodorovna,
the widow of the Russian Emperor Alexander II and the
mother of Nicholas II. In Soviet times, the chapel was
dismantled, and the source was filled up. After a while, the
source again made its way to the surface. Since 2007, over
the Pitirimov spring, the water-blessed chapel has risen again,
attracting everyone's attention.
