Stanford was founded by railroad tycoon, US Senator
and former California governor Leland Stanford and his
wife Jane Stanford. The university is named after their
only son, Leland Stanford (Jr.), who died in 1884 before
his 16th birthday. The Stanfords decided to dedicate the
university to their only son, and Leland told his wife, "The
children of California will be our children."

Leland contracted typhoid fever two months before
his 16th birthday while traveling in Europe with his
parents. The disease overtook him in Athens. The
parents rushed their son to Italy for treatment, first
to Naples, then to Rome, and finally to Florence,
where he died after several weeks of alternately
improving and worsening condition.
