Who is Matisse?
The French painter Henri Matisse is a great explorer of color who
poured feelings onto his canvases, conveying more emotion and less
detail.
He created Fauvism, an artistic movement that defined the art of the
20th and 21st centuries, and explored his own style.

3.

Previous life
Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869 in a small town in
northern France, the son of a ceramist and a prosperous grain
merchant. He was prepared for a great future: he received a law
degree. However, the future artist was not going to continue his
father's work.

4.

Henri worked for a short time as a clerk in a law office due to an
aggravation of his appendicitis. In the hospital, the mother
brought paints and paper to her son so that he would not be
bored. He soon developed an interest in painting. At the age of
twenty, Matisse entered the school of fine arts.

5.

Style search
While studying at the School of Fine Arts, Matisse sought to invent the color
of happiness, harmony, and perfection. Henri believed that color can have
a deeper effect than unnecessary details that impede the perception of
the work.

6.

Matisse was impressed by the works of Manet, Van Gogh, Gauguin,
Cezanne and Japanese engravings. Fateful for Henri was the
acquaintance with John Russell, an Australian artist who soon
became his mentor. Thanks to John, Matisse returned to
thinking about color and its role on the canvas.

7.

Success and influence
The Salon of 1905 was a turning point in the life of the artist. The
paintings of the Fauvists stood out for the transformation of reality
and the brightness of colors that evoke emotions. None of the
spectators could pass them by.

8.

Fauvism was maintained for two or three years, stunning the
academically hardened public with the play of color and form.
Gertrude Stein became the first philanthropist who was not afraid to
purchase the scandalous paintings of the French artist.

9.

Conclusion
Finally, the dreams of Henri Matisse about color, which the first mentor
Moreau spoke about, came true. He also continued to travel and explore
his style. This influenced his painting and philosophy of color. So, to this
day, contemporary artists turn to his work.
