2.

René Magritte was a Belgian-born artist who was known for his work with surrealism as well as
his thought-provoking (наводящие на размышления) images.
. After attending art school, he worked in commercial advertising to
support himself while he experimented with his painting. In the 1920s,
he began to paint in the surrealist style and became known for his witty
(остроумные) images and his use of simple graphics and everyday
objects, giving new meanings to familiar(знакомые) things
Surrealism is a trend in literature and art of the
twentieth century, which developed in the 1920s
in the artistic culture of Western avant-garde. It is
distinguished(известный) by the use of allusions
and paradoxical combinations of forms. It is
believed that surrealism has been developing for
more than forty years.

The most famous painting is «The son of Man». Magritte painted The Son of
Man as a self-portrait. The painting consists of a man in an overcoat and a
bowler hat standing in front of a short wall.
The Son of Man, 1946 by Rene Magritte
The person's face is almost completely
covered by a green apple hovering in
front of him. The picture is believed to
owe its name to the image of a modern
man - a sort of businessman, strictly
dressed, highly efficient, but still
remaining(остается) the son of the
biblical Adam and being tempted
(искушен) by the same apple.

"THE MAN WITH THE BOWLER HAT»
AND "THE GREAT WAR"
Both paintings continue the idea that
ordinary things can hide something
important, and in non-standard conditions
make people think and look for a hidden
message. The bird in the painting "The
Man with the bowler hat" is about to fly by
and open the invisible to the eye. Perhaps
this suggests that the truth cannot be
hidden forever.

LATER LIFE
August 15, 1967,
Despite having been diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer in 1963, Magritte was able to travel to
New York City for a 1965 retrospective of his
work at the Museum of Modern Art. Magritte also
explored other media during this time, making a
series of short films that featured his wife,
Georgette, as well as experimenting with
sculpture. After a period of prolonged illness, on
August 15, 1967, Magritte died at the age of 68.
