In 2002, Grigory Perelman published for the first time aninnovative work devoted to solving one of the special
cases of the geometrization hypothesis of William
Thurston. It follows from the validity of the well-known
Poincare hypothesis, which was formulated in 1904 by the
French mathematician, physicist and philosopher Henri
Poincare. The method of studying the Ricci flow described
by Perelman was called the Hamilton-Perelman theory.

In 2006, Grigory Perelman solved the Poincarehypothesis, for which he was awarded the Fields Medal
international prize, but he refused it. In 2006, Science
magazine named the proof of Poincare's theorem the
scientific breakthrough of the year. This is the first work
that has earned such a title.

In 2007, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraphpublished a list of one hundred living geniuses. In it,
Grigory Perelman is in ninth place. In addition to
Perelman, this list includes only two Russians – Garry
Kasparov and Mikhail Kalashnikov.

In 2010, the Clay Mathematical Institute awardedPerelman a $1 million prize for proving the Poincare
conjecture. For the first time in history, the prize was
awarded for solving one of the Problems of the
millennium.
In 1900, at the Mathematical Congress in Paris, David
Hilbert proposed a list of 23 problems that should be
solved in the 21st century. To date, 21 problems have
been resolved. In 1970, matmeh graduate Yu.V.
Matiyasevich completed the solution of the tenth Hilbert
problem.
