Gentoo. History
1.
Gentoo2.
History• History of the distribution: Daniel Robbins began creating his own distribution called
Enoch Linux. On March 31, 2002, the first version of the distribution was released. The
Gentoo Foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2004. The main goal of the
distribution was its own assembly, optimized for specific hardware and containing the
minimum set of programs required by the user. During the project, this OS was renamed
Gentoo/GNU Linux.
• The most important thing follows from these words - Gentoo, unlike many other popular
distributions in the Linux line, and especially Windows and MacOS, is aimed at giving
freedom to users, from which the following three points undoubtedly follow:
• 1) Self-assembly, to be more precise - power over the system;
• 2) Compiling;
• 3) Source code.
• Also, Gentoo, as for me, is one of the main operating systems in its list - non-systemd
systems.
3.
Self-assemblyThe first is Self-assembly. With
Gentoo it is possible to install
anything and any way you want:
you want OpenRC or Systemd, it's
up to you, enable dri3 support in
mesa and Xorg or leave dri2, it's
also up to you. How about an
alternative package manager if the
standard emerge and portage are
not for you arrange and so on.

What’s about Ubuntu? But what, for example, can
Ubuntu or Kali linux offer us
instead? Should I download
Gnome or Xfce4 shell? Ubuntu
itself has long been based on
the notorious systemd alone.

CompilationCompilation is the process by which a program interprets
source code for a specific operating system/kernel. Using this
function you can achieve, although not high, but still
performance.
Why is such a sensational compilation, which is said to be one
of the most positive aspects of Gentoo, not so good for certain
users?
Its advantages are as follows: from the source code you can
quite easily make a program for a given OS that will work
quickly, stably and efficiently, but what about the waiting time...
Yes, this is its disadvantage. Sometimes the compilation time
reaches 6 hours of waiting, but this is very rare; most often on
average hardware, updates do not exceed more than 3 hours.
Compilation need will give you two skills: You will better
understand how the OS works at a lower, more in-depth level
and, at the same time, the code of the source program itself
and how it interacts with operating systems and kernels.
A large number of users began to often notice that they were
being spied on by their phone or PC.
6.
Open sourceOpen source provides:
a) You can go anywhere and find out how
things work, and also change certain files
for yourself, knowing that if you did
something wrong, you are to blame This
is about you, not the system. b)
Anonymity. Yes, I understand that Kali,
like Ubuntu, is open source, but,
unfortunately, even advertising can be
shoved into it. Gentoo is also open
source, but unlike Ubuntu, I trust it
because it is made by the people and for
the people. If I don't like something in the
system, I can easily remove this or that
piece of code.

Others distributions based by GentooAlso, I found it quite interesting that there are a
lot of distributions based on Gentoo Linux. For
example, Sabayon Linux, Liberte Linux, Zentoo,
Toorox, Pentoo, Trassir OS etc. Distributions
based on Gentoo have certain advantages:
performance, self-assembly, and therefore
anonymity.
Another advantage of Gentoo I would like to note
is its good and competent documentation, which
can compete with the Arch Wiki. It is similar in
size, if not larger, than Arch Wiki.
Also, as for me, one of the most important
advantages is that this system is one of the most
popular in the list of non-systemd systems.
