The Olympic Games started in Greece in 776 B.C.
They were held in honour of Zeus at mount Olympus every 4 years.
Only men took part in the competitions. The best Greek athletes came to Olympia for 5 days.
Running and jumping took place on the 1st day of the Games.
Throwing the discus and throwing the javelin were on the 2d day.
The 3d day was given to wrestling and on the 4th day there were sport games for boys.
Chariot races were held on the 5th day of the Olympiad.
The Olympic winners got an olive wreath.
The Olympic Games were very popular, but in 394 A.D. they were stopped by the Romans.
At the end of the 19th century Pierre de Coubertin from France organized the modern international Olympic Games.
They were held in Athens in 1896. Sportsmen from 13 countries visited them.
