In the first post-war decade the
Reichstag building located in
the westem part of Berlin was in
a dilapidated state.

Restoration
• The renovation work was delayed by West German architect Paul Baumgarten. Who
won the competition, abandoned the construction of the dome, and also removed many
of the carved and plaster decorations in the style.

Post-war condition and restoration of
the building
• As a result of World War II air raids and the subsequent assault, the
structure was severely damaged. After the division of Germany, he found
himself on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, next to which
the Berlin Wall ran. In the hungry post-war years, city residents grew
potatoes on the land around the ruins of a once powerful structure.
