DANAË (REMBRANDT PAINTING)
The restoration process

2.

In the history of art, the end of the 20th
century is also remembered as a time of
vandalism. Paintings were doused with
sulfuric acid, cut and defaced with paint.
Paintings by Da Vinci, Malevich, Dürer and
Rembrandt suffered in this way.

On 15 June 1985, a man
came to the Rembrandt Hall
in the Hermitage along with
a
tour.
He
approached
"Danaë" and, taking a vial
from under the floorboards,
poured its contents directly
into
the
centre
of
the
canvas.

Specialists estimated the
degree of damage to the
painting
at
27%.
The
image of Danaë was the
most damaged, which is
typical
for
paintings
of
nude women. The flowing
acid left ugly drips on the
canvas,
filled
corroded paint.

However, conservation was not the end of the
matter: it was decided to restore pictorial losses
by toning, that is, by restoring colours without
painting details. This approach helps to restore
the integrity of the image and to preserve the
author's work as much as possible.

The "Danaë" reappeared before
Hermitage visitors on 14 October
1997. Special ropes and a platform
were made to move it from the
restoration hall, as the non-glare
armoured glass was very heavy.
Today Danaë can be seen in the
Hall of the Dutch and Flemish
Schools on the 2nd floor of the
Winter Palace.
