The consequences of World War II were enormous for
the entire world. A large number of people were killed,
but many people were also injured, leaving them with
lifelong disabilities. Therefore, there is a great need for
the rehabilitation of these people.

In 1944, the Spinal Injury Center was opened in the
village of Stoke Mandeville in England.It was headed
by neurologist Ludwig Guttmann. He quickly gained a
reputation as an innovator through his practice in the
field of medical rehabilitation and by motivating
people with spinal cord injuries.The first games
featured 14 men and two women. They competed in
archery. The choice of this sport was not accidental,
because performance in it depends on the capabilities
of the upper body, and it was also one of those
disciplines in which people with paraplegia could
compete on equal terms with their colleagues without
disabilities.
