On August 31, 1997, Diana died as aresult of a car accident in a tunnel
near the Alma Bridge, when the
driver of the car was driving away
from being pursued by
paparazzi[178]. Along with her,
Dodi Al-Fayed, her lover, and her
driver, Henry Paul, died. Trevor
Rhys-Jones, the princess's
bodyguard, survived but suffered a
serious head injury and therefore
does not remember the details of
the accident. The funeral took place
on September 6 in London, with her
sons, William and Harry, following
the coffin. The broadcast on
television was watched by over 32
million people in the UK alone;
worldwide the number of viewers
was several times higher.

As her brother said at herfuneral, she was "the
unique, the
extraordinary and
irreplaceable Diana,
whose beauty, both
internal and external,
will never be
extinguished from our
minds."
