Ellen Kay was born on December 11, 1849
in the Swedish city of Smoland. The family
was rich and ancestral. The family followed
a strict upbringing.

Ellen Kay was home-schooled. This
was done by the mother and the
governesses. The girl was fond of
reading.

In 1874, she went to teach in
Denmark at national institutes
for underprivileged children. In
1880, she joined Anna Whitlock
College for Girls as a teacher.
She dreamed of founding her
own institute in Sweden. She
traveled a lot in Austria and
Germany and gave lectures on
parenting.

Ellen Kay was not married and
had no children.
