4. Synthesis Paragraph
The Synthesis 'Problem' Paragraph involves supporting claims using evidence from threesources while following appropriate academic conventions.
Expectations
• A clear topic sentence about the problem.
• Cohesive devices to support the flow of the paragraph.
• Supporting sentences containing evidence from the 3 sources. These should be
paraphrases - not direct quotes.
• Interpretation sentences that explain the evidence and represent the student writer’s
voice, i.e. “This suggests that …”
• A concluding sentence is optional.
Appropriate academic style throughout including in-text citations (but no reference list).
• A recommended range of 200-300 words.
5. Annotated Bibliography
An Annotated Bibliography is a short list of useful resources and a justification of theirusefulness. Sources can include books, journal articles, and websites. You will collect many
useful resources for your referenced essay, which will be introduced soon.
Expectations
• Three sources are required.
• For each of the 3 sources, write a short summary of the main ideas, explain your reasons
for selecting it using the CRAAP analysis framework, and include a full reference in APA
style.
• Both paragraphs (the summary paragraph and the justification paragraph) should be
between 100-150 words in length (making a total of 200-300 words per entry).
6. Situation-Problem-Solution-Evaluation Essay
Write an SPSE essay. There will be 3 Business topics and 3 Computing topics to choose from.Expectations
• Include evidence from academic sources.
• Structure the essay using either a block or a point-by-point arrangement.
• Include in-text citations and provide a reference list at the end of the essay, following APA style.
• Link the ideas using cohesive devices / transitions.
• Write about at least two problems and two solutions.
• Include a minimum of 7 sources.
The word count is 1200 words (+/- 10%). The word limit includes all the paragraphs but not the reference list.
• A penalty deduction of 4% will be applied to essays of 1400 words or more.
• A penalty deduction of 2% will be applied to essays of 1321-1399 words.
• Markers will stop reading substantially over-length essays when 1500 words are reached.
7. Situation-Problem-Solution-Evaluation Essay

8. Authentic Listening
The Authentic Listening audio is about 5 minutes long and it is in the format of a lecture orinformative talk. Students listen twice and take notes efficiently. Then, they use their notes
to write a summary of the important information.
Procedure
• First Listening (5 minutes): Apply note-taking techniques to identify the main ideas and
supporting details of the lecture. A PowerPoint slide will be provided to help organise the
notes.
Review (5 minutes): Silently check the notes to identify gaps or unclear notes.
• Second Listening (5 minutes): Complete the notes by adding additional details and
supporting information.
• Summary (45 minutes): Write a 200–300-word summary of the lecture using the notes.
9. Seminar Discussion
Seminar Discussions will be about a problem and four possible solutions to the problem.The topics will be explored during the module. The task is to evaluate the solutions and
choose the best solution as a group.
Procedure
In groups of 3 or 4, the students will be presented with a prompt card.
Preparation (2 minutes): Consider the problem and the effectiveness of the four solutions
on the prompt card and take some notes. Ask the teacher for vocabulary definitions but do
not ask for help with the ideas.
• Discussion (15 / 20 minutes): Share opinions and agree and disagree politely; manage the
conversation without the teacher by inviting others to speak. Provide a final decision
about the most effective solution.

Individual PresentationDeliver an 8 minute individual presentation about the same topic as your SPSE essay. Create PowerPoint
Slides to support your presentation.
Expectations
• Provide details about the situation and problem.
• Outline and evaluate the solutions.
• Use visual aids to support your message.
• Structure your presentation clearly.
• Use appropriate language to transition between the sections.
• Speak accurately and clearly.
• Vary the intonation of your voice to engage the audience.
• Maintain appropriate eye contact and body language.
• Use cue cards – not a script.
• Respond to audience questions at the end.
• Provide a reference list at the end of your slides.
