HISTORUCAL FEATURES
• Kuril lake was formed about 8,400
years ago on the day when the Ilyinsky
and Dikiy Greben volcanoes erupted.
The eruption was so powerful that the
walls of the crater of one of the
ancient volcanoes collapsed, and the
earth’s crust beneath it sank, creating
a large caldera. Gradually, it filled with
meltwater and rainwater, which led to
the formation of Kuril Lake. The first
description of the lake was made by G.
Steller in 1740. In 1908 and 1909, the
lake was studied by an expedition led
by F. P. Ryabushinsky.
