He lived from July 16, 1723, to February 23,1792. He was an English history and portrait
painter and a representative of the 18th-century
English school of portraiture. He was an art
theorist, the first president of the Royal
Academy of Arts, and a member of the Royal
Society of London. He was also a member of
the Society of Dilettante Artists, founded for the
study of ancient art.
3. The life of Joshua Reynolds
Joshua Reynolds was born in Plympton, Devonshire. He was thethird of eleven children in a family of hereditary priests. The father
of the future painter, the Reverend Samuel Reynolds (1681-1745),
a Bachelor of Arts, a teacher at a gymnasium in Plympton, later a
lecturer at Balliol College in Oxford, prepared his son for a career
in medicine, but the young man's early love exclusively for art and
reading books on the history of antiquity determined his vocation.
4. What made Joshua Reynolds stand out
Having enrolled in 1741 as an apprentice to theportrait painter T. Goodson in London, Reynolds
studied under his guidance for three years, and
then spent another three years in Devonport
and returned to London in 1746. In 1749, he
went to Italy, where he studied the works of
great masters, mainly Titian, Correggio,
Raphael and Michelangelo. Upon his return to
London in 1752, he soon gained a great
reputation as an extraordinarily skilled portrait
painter, and occupied a high position among
English artists.
