Quantifiers‘Much’, ‘many’, ‘a lot of’, ‘a
little’, ‘a few’ are words that
express the number or the
amount of things.
These words are called
quantifiers.
Example: I have a lot of
bananas in the bag.
We can choose these
quantifiers depending on how
much of something we have
and the type (countable or
uncountable).

A Lot Of‘A lot of’ is often used in affirmative sentences to express a large
number or amount of something.
We can use ‘a lot of’ with:
Countable Nouns
(things we can count)
Example:
There are a lot of onions on
this shelf.
Uncountable Nouns
(things we can’t count)
Example:
This car cost a lot of
money.

ManyWe use ‘many’ to talk about a large number of things.
We use it before:
Plural Countable Nouns
We often use ‘many’ in
negative and interrogative
sentences. We can use it in
affirmative sentences but it
sounds a bit more formal.
Examples:
There aren’t many tomatoes at home, I’ll buy some more.
Are there many people in the supermarket?
Many people think that English is the most common language.

We use it before:

We normally use 'much' in
negative and interrogative

goes before:
