The First Circumnavigation of the World• The first circumnavigation of the world (1519-1522) is one
of the greatest feats in the history of exploration. It was
initiated by the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan
and completed by the Spanish captain Juan Sebastián
Elcano.
3.
The Goal• Financed by the Spanish
Crown,Magellan aimed to find a
western sea route to the Spice
Islands (the Moluccas) — a
source of valuable spices like
cloves and nutmeg — thus
challenging Portugal's eastern
trade monopoly.
4.
The Expedition• · Start: On September
20, 1519, five ships
(Trinidad, San Antonio,
Concepción, Victoria,
Santiago) with about 270
men left Spain.
5.
The Expedition• · Key Discovery: After a long
search along South America,
they found and navigated a
treacherous strait at the
continent's southern tip, later
named the Strait of Magellan.
6.
The Expedition· The Pacific Ocean: Entering a
new, vast ocean, Magellan
named it "Pacific" (peaceful) due
to its calm waters. The crossing
lasted months, leading to extreme
hunger, scurvy, and death among
the crew.
7.
The Expedition• · Magellan's Death: The
expedition reached the
Philippines. There, on April 27,
1521, Magellan was killed in a
battle with locals on the island
of Mactan
• · Completion: Under the
leadership of Juan Sebastián
Elcano, the remaining crew
continued. Only one ship, the
Victoria, managed to return to
Spain on September 6, 1522,
loaded with spices. Of the
original crew, only 18
survivors completed the
circumnavigation.
