The First Circumnavigation of the RussiaThe first Russian circumnavigation of the globe was a
landmark voyage led by Captain Ivan Krusenstern on the
sloop Nadezhda (Hope) and Captain Yuri Lisyansky on the
sloop Neva. It lasted from August 7, 1803, to August 1806.
3.
The Goal• The expedition's main
goals were to establish
a sea route to supply
Russian settlements in
Alaska, conduct
scientific research in
the Pacific Ocean, and
attempt to open trade
relations with Japan
and China.
4.
The Expedition• After sailing from Kronstadt and
crossing the Atlantic, the ships
rounded Cape Horn into the Pacific.
They then separated: the Neva
headed to Alaska to assist Russian
colonies, while the Nadezhda sailed
to Kamchatka and then to Japan on
a diplomatic mission, which
ultimately failed. The ships reunited
in Macau and returned to Russia via
the Indian Ocean and the Cape of
Good Hope.
5.
Result• The journey was a great
success. It resulted in
improved maps of the
Pacific, valuable scientific
data on ocean currents,
flora, fauna, and indigenous
cultures, and proved the
viability of the long sea route.
This voyage marked the
beginning of Russia's era of
global maritime exploration.
