2. Geography and Nature

• Location: The smallest continent, located in the
Southern Hemisphere between the Indian and
Pacific Oceans.
Climate: Ranges from tropical in the north to
temperate in the south. Known for droughts and
bushfires.
Mountains: The Great Dividing Range (east).
Highest point: Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m).
Rivers: The largest river system is the MurrayDarling (often dries up).
Animals: marsupials (kangaroos, koalas), egglaying mammals (platypus, echidna), many birds
(emu, cockatoo).

3. Population

• Population: About 26 million people
(2023).
• Density: One of the lowest in the world.
Most people live on the east and
southeast coast.
• Major Cities: Sydney, Melbourne,
Brisbane, Perth.
• Origin: Very multicultural country.
Indigenous people (Aboriginals) are
about 3.2%. The rest are descendants
of settlers from all over the world.

constellation, the Union Jack in the canton,
and the large Commonwealth Star (sevenpointed).
Coat of Arms: A shield with state emblems,
supported by a kangaroo and an emu.
Unofficial Symbols: The Opera House,
Uluru, the boomerang.
