The "Monsters of Rock" festival, held on September 28,1991, at the Tushino airfield, became one of the largest and
most significant events in the history of world music.
Festival symbolized the fall of the Iron Curtain and the
USSR's impending collapse. This free event drew an estimated
1.6 million people enough to fill 35 modern stadiums.
3. The Lineup
•Pantera•E.S.T. (Электро-Судорожная Терапия)
•The Black Crowes
•Metallica
•AC/DC
4. Pantera
Pantera: Opening with high-energy tracks from Cowboysfrom Hell, their set shocked Soviet audiences and sparked
the first clashes with police. The crowd remembered them
for their incredible aggression and powerful sound. Their
performance in Moscow is considered one of the band's best
and cemented their status as world-class stars.
5. E.S.T. (Электро-Судорожная Терапия)
E.S.T.(Электро-Судорожная Терапия): The only Sovietband present, they provided a local "anarcho-rock"
flavor and were warmly received by the massive crowd.
6. The Black Crowes
The Black Crowes: An American rock band that playedblues-rock and hard rock in the spirit of the 70s. They
stood out noticeably from the other acts, who played
much heavier music. Despite an initially cold reception
from metal fans, their professionalism eventually won
over the audience.
7. Metallica
Metallica: At the time of their performance, the bandwas at the peak of their form just a month before,
they had released their legendary self-titled
album/The Black Album. Their set became iconic. The
sight of an endless sea of people during "Enter
Sandman" and "Creeping Death" is still considered one
of the most impressive images in rock history. The
musicians themselves were amazed by the scale of
the event: military helicopters circled above the
crowd, and police barely held back the onslaught of
hundreds of thousands of fans.
8. AC/DC
AC/DC: The legendary Australians came toMoscow as the main headliners of the
"Monsters of Rock" world tour. The band
brought their famous show with them: giant
inflatable dolls, a bell for "Hells Bells,"
and, of course, artillery cannons for the
finale, "For Those About to Rock (We Salute
You)." AC/DC's performance was a powerful
culmination of the day, marking rock 'n'
roll's final victory over the Iron Curtain.
