►Tenzing-Hillary
Airport in Lukla, Nepal, is widely
regarded as one of the most dangerous airports in
the world . Its extreme characteristics make it
fundamentally different from typical commercial
airports.

Located at an altitude of 2,860 meters above sea level, the airport has a single asphalt runway that
is just 527 meters long. To put that in perspective, a standard international airport runway is
typically between 3,000 and 4,000 meters in length. The runway also has a significant 12% gradient,
sloping uphill to help aircraft slow down when landing and accelerate when taking off. The two ends
of the runway are at different heights, with a difference of 60 meters between them

The
airport has minimal navigation
equipment—only a radio station—so all
flights operate under visual flight rules
during daylight hours and only in good
weather . The weather in the Himalayas is
notoriously unpredictable, and flights are
frequently delayed or canceled due to low
clouds or poor visibility . Most flights
operate in the early morning before clouds
form in the valley

Pilots
require special certification to fly into
Lukla. They must have at least 100 shorttakeoff-and-landing (STOL) landings, one year
of flying STOL aircraft in Nepal, and must
complete 10 flights into Lukla with a certified
instructor pilot .
The
airport is served by several Nepalese
airlines including Nepal Airlines, Yeti Airlines,
Sita Air, Tara Air, and Summit Air, all using small
STOL aircraft such as the DHC-6 Twin Otter and
Dornier Do 228, which typically carry around 20
passengers . A one-way ticket from Kathmandu
