William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He was the third of eight children in his family. His father,John Shakespeare, was a leatherworker and trader, and his mother, Mary Arden, came from a wealthy family.
Shakespeare received his education at the local grammar school, where he studied Latin and classical literature. When he was 18 years old, he
married Anne Hathaway, who was 8 years older than him. They had three children: a daughter Susanna and twins — a son Hamnet and a
daughter Judith.
In the 1590s, Shakespeare moved to London to work in theatre. He joined an acting company called the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. Shakespeare
both wrote plays and acted in them. He wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. His most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth,
Othello, King Lear, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Shakespeare worked at the Globe Theatre, which opened in 1599. This theatre was round and open to the sky. It could seat up to 3 000
spectators. Interestingly, women did not act in his plays — young men played all roles, including female characters.
Shakespeare also greatly influenced the English language. He invented over 1 700 words, such as eyeball, fashionable, lonely, dwindle, and
swagger.
The playwright died on April 23, 1616 — on his 52nd birthday. He was buried in the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. Today, his
works are still performed all over the world and are studied in schools and universities.
