4. Product Identity & Physical Profile
Product Identity & Physical ProfileChemical Identity & Molecular Architecture Ammonium Ceric Nitrate (CAN) carries the molecular
formula (NH₄)₂Ce(NO₃)₆ with a molecular weight of 548.23 g/mol. This complex coordination
compound contains cerium in its tetravalent (+4) oxidation state, making it a uniquely powerful
oxidizing agent in inorganic chemistry.
High-Purity Extra Pure Grade The product is offered at a minimum 98% assay purity on an
anhydrous basis, classified under the Extra Pure grade. This level of purity ensures consistent
reactivity and reliable results in sensitive analytical and synthetic applications.
Distinctive Physical Characteristics CAN presents as a reddish-orange crystalline powder with a
slight characteristic odor at 20°C. Its striking color is a direct indicator of cerium's +4 oxidation
state and aids in visual quality identification during handling and formulation.
Exceptional Water Solubility With a solubility of 141 g per 100 mL of water at 25°C, CAN
demonstrates remarkably high aqueous solubility. This property makes it highly versatile for
preparing concentrated reaction solutions in organic synthesis and wet chemistry protocols.
5. Safety, Handling & Regulatory Profile
Safety, Handling & Regulatory Profile• Strong Oxidizing Nature - Category 2CAN is classified as an Oxidizing Solid, Category 2
(GHS03), capable of intensifying fire or causing combustion in contact with flammables. Strict
segregation from organic solvents, combustibles, and reducing agents is mandatory during
storage and laboratory use.
• Corrosivity & Skin Sensitization Hazard codes H314 (skin/eye burns) and H317 (skin
sensitization) indicate serious contact risks requiring full PPE. Personnel must wear chemicalresistant gloves, protective eyewear, and lab coats; any skin or eye contact requires immediate
water irrigation and medical attention.
• Environmental Toxicity & Aquatic Hazard Classified under GHS09 with H410, CAN is highly
toxic to aquatic organisms with long-lasting environmental effects. Disposal must comply with
local hazardous waste regulations; even small quantities must never be discharged into
drains, water bodies, or soil.
• Regulatory & Shelf Life Specifications CAN is assigned UN No. 3085, IMCO Class 5.1 & 8,
Packing Group II, with an HS Code of 2846.1090. The product carries a 60-month shelf life
when stored under proper conditions, offering long-term stability for laboratory and industrial
procurement planning.
