Green Fashion

2. Green Fashion
also called eco fashion, is a part of thegrowing design philosophy and trend
of sustainability, the goal of which is to
create a system which can be
supported indefinitely in terms of
human impact on the environment and
social responsibility
3. Brief History of Eco Fashion
Sustainable fashion came into the public foray in the late1980s and early 1990s as well-known companies such
as Patagonia and ESPRIT brought "sustainability" into
their businesses. The owners of those companies at that
time were outdoorsmen and witnessed the environment
being degraded by increased use. They commissioned
research into the impacts of fibers used in their companies.
For Patagonia, this resulted in a lifecycle assessment for
four fibers, cotton, wool, nylon and polyester. For ESPRIT
the focus was on cotton, which represented 90% of their
business at that time.
4. It's Better for the Earth
Conventional cotton alone requires a third of a pound ofchemicals to make just one t-shirt--and how many t-shirts
do you have sitting in your drawers right now? Choosing
organic fibers or sustainable fabrics--like those made from
bamboo or hemp--can also trim the amount of carbon you
give off and chemicals you bring into your life, and there's
no doubt that's a good thing.
5. It’s better for people
Buying clothes labeledunder the Fair Trade
Act is sustainable on
several levels: You can
be sure it was produced
under
safe
working
conditions,
it's
sweatshop free, and the
person who made it
earned a fair wage.
6. It’s better for animals
You may love the look of those leather boots yousaw on the runway, but the life of the animal that
gave up its skin should have you thinking twice
about buying them. Making sure your closet is
stocked with cruelty-free clothes means you can
get dressed without worrying about what went into
what you're wearing.

A few years ago, Pharrell
Williams joined the G-Star
Raw team, and together, they
partnered up with The Vortex
Project and Parley for the
Oceans to invent Bionic Yarn,
an eco-friendly fabric made of
fibers derived from recycled
plastic bottles found in the
ocean.
The
result?
A
streetwear line of denim and
apparel that cleans the ocean.
8. STELLA MCCARTNEY
StellaMcCartney's
eponymous
line
is,
essentially, eco-fashion at
its finest. The brand has
always
been
upfront
about
its
animal-free
products and its goal to
be more sustainable. To
start, her London stores
are powered by wind
enegy, and her highly
coveted platform brogues
are made from certifiedsustainable wood and
renewable resources.
9. AMOUR VERT
The brand's motto reads,"With every stitch a
purpose,"
and
that
couldn't be any more
true. Amour Vert (which
translates
to
"Green
Love" in French) boasts a
zero-waste
design
philosophy,
which
includes local, made-inthe-USA manufacturing,
non-toxic
dyes,
and
sustainable fibers. Plus,
for every tee purchased,
Amour Vert will plant a
tree.

FREEDOM OFANIMALS
Actress Nikki Reed joined
forces with accessories
brand Freedom of Animals
to launch a line of bags
that are as chic as they
are ecologically sound.
And we can't get enough
of the designs or their ecofriendly message. Each
one is made of postconsumer,
cruelty-free,
eco-faux leather and lined
with organic cotton.
11. H&M CONSCIOUS
H&M CONSCIOUSThanks to its commitment to sustainability,
H&M is one of the few fashion brands
that's making an effort to be competitive in
the environmentally friendly fashion realm.
When the brand's not partnering with ecoconscious stars, like Olivia Wilde, it's
constantly packing its eco-friendly line with
basics and one-off statement pieces, like
this rust-colored blazer.
12. I AM NOT A VIRGIN
This dress is made out ofplastic water bottles. No
joke. This brand upcycles
bottles found in the
ocean, turning them into
soft basic tees and
dresses.
13. RAFA
Hand-made by a groupof artisans based in Los
Angeles (and with eco
materials to boot), you
know you can feel good
about stepping into any
pair of Rafa shoes.
These
