Rice Transplanter Field Calibration Playbook:Hill Spacing, Mat Nursery & Machine Settings
for Higher Kharif Yields
A practical guide for farmers and custom-hiring centres using a 4-row walk-behind
rice transplanter

Calibration, not just the machine, decides the yieldLabour is the bottleneck
Uniform stand = uniform
crop
Most losses are set-up
losses
Manual transplanting needs a
large crew in a narrow window.
A machine only saves that time
if the first pass is right.
Equal hill spacing and seedlings
per hill give even tillering, even
maturity and an easier harvest.
Missing hills, floating seedlings
and uneven depth usually trace
back to the nursery, the field or
the settings, not the machine.
A well-calibrated rice transplanter plants four uniform rows in a single pass.

How to read it
Hills/m² = 1 ÷ (row spacing × pitch)
160 mm gives ~31% more hills than 210
mm
Denser pitch suits short-duration, lowtillering varieties and late planting
Wider pitch suits long-duration and hybrid
varieties that tiller strongly
All three pitches are selectable on a 4-row
rice planting machine.

Mat nursery readiness: five checks before plantingSeedling age
Commonly 15–20 days for mat nurseries; older seedlings tangle in the feeder
Seedling height
Roughly 10–15 cm and even across the mat
Root mat strength
Lift a corner — the mat should hold together like a carpet
Mat moisture
Moist, not soaking; dry mats break, wet mats slip
Mat size
Cut to fit the seedling tray exactly — no gaps, no overlap

Puddle
Level
Settle
Drain
Uniform puddling with no
clods or hard pan pockets
Laser or plank levelling so
water depth is even
Let soil settle about 1–2
days (longer on clay) so
seedlings don't sink
Keep a thin film of water
(around 1–3 cm) at
transplanting
Field tip: if the planting finger leaves a deep groove or seedlings lean over, the field is under-settled or too
wet.

Four settings to dial in on the first 20 metresSeedlings per hill
Planting depth
Use the seeding feed adjustment; aim for
2–4 seedlings per hill and check by
counting 10 hills.
5-step depth adjustment: shallow (about 2–
3 cm) for faster tillering; go deeper only on
soft soils.
Planting pitch
Wheel height & hydraulics
Choose 160, 180 or 210 mm on the
rice transplanter to match variety duration
and planting date.
Set wheel height to field depth; autohydraulics keep depth uniform across hard
and soft patches.

How the number is worked out
1.2 m × 0.4–0.84 m/s ≈ 1,730–3,630 m² per hour of pure planting, i.e. about 0.4–0.9 acre/hour.
Real output is lower: turning, tray refilling and field shape typically take a third or more of the time.
Keep 2–3 people refilling mats so the operator never waits.
On larger farms, a riding paddy transplanter cuts turning and refilling time.

Troubleshooting: symptom, likely cause, fixSymptom
Likely cause
Fix
Missing hills
Weak or dry mat; gaps in tray
Use stronger, moist mats cut to tray size
Floating seedlings
Too much water; depth too shallow
Drain to a thin film; go one depth step
deeper
Seedlings buried
Field under-settled; depth too deep
Allow more settling time; reduce depth
Too many per hill
Feed setting too high; overgrown mat
Reduce seedling feed; transplant younger
mats
Crooked rows
Uneven levelling; operator speed
Re-level; use the marker and a steady pace

The first 10 days after transplantingUniform machine transplanting makes this follow-up faster: rows are straight, so gaps are easy to spot.
Day 0–3
Day 3–7
Day 7–10
Keep shallow water; let seedlings
establish without submergence
Walk the rows and gap-fill missing
hills from leftover mats
Start weed control and raise
water gradually as the crop grows
