4. Chiang Mai was a capital of the Lanna Kingdom 1292–15 January 1775
Chiang Mai was capital ofthe Lanna Kingdom after
its founding in 1296, during
the same period of time
as the establishment of
the Sukhothai
Kingdom. From then,
Chiang Mai not only
became the capital and
cultural core of the Lanna
Kingdom, it was also the
center of Buddhism in
northern Thailand and
King Meng Rai built
innumerable temples.

province of
Thailand which
places of Northern
Thailand.
Surrounded by
the mountain
ranges of the
Thai highlands, it
covers an area
of approximately
20,107 km2

7. Tha phae gate
It is a great spot andhistoric part of
Chiang Mai where is
the old and new
cities meet. This gate
is one of five original
gates of the wall city
which was
completely rebuilt.
8. Wat Chedi Luang
It is the historic temple ofthe big stupa or temple
of the royal stupa which
placed in the center of
old Chiang Mai area.
The grounds of this
temple are home to
“City Pillar” which is
supposed to be
protecting the city.
A festival in honor of the
city pillar is held every
May and last 6-8 days.
9. The Three Kings Monument
This monument is one of the bestknown and most recognizable of
the many Chiang Mai attractions.
The Three kings were King of
Chiang Mai in the middle, King of
Sukothai on left and other is King
of Payao who together were
responsible for founding of
Chiang Mai in 1296.
Chiang Mai people look upon
the Three Kings Monument as a
shrine and makes offerings in the
hop of blessings from the spirits of
these supremely powerful kings.
10. Wat Phra Tad Doi Suthep
The temple is refered to as“Doi Suthep” although this
is actually the name of
the mountain where it is
located.
Wat Phra Tad Doi Suthep
is not just important
religiously but also
historically. This is an old
school Buddist temple
founded in the 14th
century A.D.
11. Elephants Camp
The Teak tree forests thatonce covered the
Northern Thailand
landscape around
Chiang Mai were the
workhouses not only for
the timber loggers but
also the elephants and
their handles(Mahouts)
who had to drag the
felled trees away for
processing.
