Amnesty International: Brief History
In 1961, Peter Benenson has established AI in Great Britain
• 1972: Amnesty launches its first campaign
against torture;
• 1977: Amnesty is awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize for contributing to ‘securing
the ground for freedom, for justice, and
thereby also for peace in the world’;
• 1988: First campaign against death
penalty.

3.

Amnesty International: Strategic Dimension
AI remains neutral in each conflict. It’s main purpose is to support those
deprived of their rights and freedoms. Also, AI documents violations of
the international laws and human rights abuses.
Main goals:
• Ending torture;
• Rights of the refugees;
• Complete abolition of death penalties;
• Women's, children's, minorities' rights;
• Rights of prisoners of conscience;
• Protection of human dignity.

4.

Amnesty International: Output
AI holds its campaigns globally. States have a responsibility to protect
human rights. However, many are failing to do this.
Good example: due to globalization, many
companies operating worldwide are often
involved in serious abuses, such as forced
labor and forcibly relocating communities
from their homelands.
Sometimes, their activity is a cause of
fearsome disasters…

HUMAN RIGHTS FRIENDLY SCHOOLS
PROJECT:
Amnesty International supports
schools and their wider communities
in all regions of the world to build a
global culture of human rights.
A Human Rights Friendly School
places human rights at the heart of
the learning experience and makes
human rights an integral part of
everyday school life.
