В написании удваивается конечная согласная буква, если
односложное прилагательное оканчивается на одну
согласную с предшествующим кратким гласным звуком:

big - bigger – the biggest
fat – fatter- the fattest

Конечная гласная е опускается
перед фиксами -еr, -est:
