Italy (/ˈɪtəli/ IT-ə-lee), officially the Italian
Republic (Italian: Repubblica italiana [reˈpubːlika
itaˈljaːna]), is a unitary parliamentary republic in
Europe. The basic law of the state is the
Constitution adopted in 1947.The head of state Is
the President of Italy. The Executive branch and the
Government are headed by the President of the
Italian Council of Ministers.

Geographical position
Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. With around 61 million inhabitants
it is the fourth most populous EU member state.
It borders with France in the north-west (488 km), Switzerland (740 km) and
Austria (430 km) - in the north, Slovenia - in the north-east (232 km). It also has
internal borders with the Vatican (3.2 km) and San Marino (39 km).
Active volcanoes (Vesuvius, Etna); earthquakes are frequent. Wetting the seas from the east the Apennine peninsula is washed by the Adriatic Sea with the
Venetian Gulf in its northern part.

valley and Friuli-Venezia Giulia — enjoy a special
status), which as administrative-territorial unit 110
provinces.
