Special education (also known as special-needs
education, aided education, exceptional education, special
ed. , SEN or SPED) is the practice of educating students in a way
that addresses their individual differences and special needs.

As a special education teacher, you can work with disabled
students at elementary, middle, and high schools. Students'
disabilities might range from mild learning difficulties to severe
physical and mental impairments. You'll use a variety of
instruction methods to teach disabled students including group
activities, one-on-one mentorship, computer technologies, and
real-life applications.

These teachers provide special education services to
meet the requirements of moderate to severe needs
students who have a range of learning, emotional,
physical and mental disabilities.
Qualifications and Experience
•Bachelors degree in the appropriate field
•valid State teaching certification
•appropriate Special Education endorsements or licensure
•experience in diagnosing and assessing learning
disorders
•experience in educating special needs students
•proven effective classroom and student behavior
management skills
•knowledge of current special education practices and
methodologies
•knowledge and understanding of State, local and federal
regulations and policies affecting special education
•working knowledge of educational technology
applications

Special Education Teacher duties and responsibilities
•Teaching a small group of students and individuals inside
and outside of the classroom

•Using special skills to teach children Braille,
sign language or lip reading
•Provide the necessary information to the classroom
teacher prior to the child entering the general education
classroom regarding the student’s disability, medical
concerns, and/or equipment operation (ways to meet
unique needs).
•Develop schedules and supervise plans for
paraeducators.
•With the general education teacher, develop and
supervise plan for paraprofessional duties.

•modify and adapt conventional educational programs and
curriculum to meet the requirements of special needs
students
•prepare special needs students for inclusion and
transition to mainstream
•maintain a current knowledge of special education best
practices and trends
