History behind Sardar Vallabhbhai Janyanti
Patel played a crucial role in India's freedom movement
and in the integration of India from 560 princely states.
He was the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home
Minister of independent India. National Unity Day is
observed to acknowledge the efforts of Patel to unite the
nation.

The Statue of Unity is a tribute to the Indian leader Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel, unveiled on 31 October 2018. This statue is a
patriotic symbol of the legacy of a man who spent his life in the
struggle for freedom. As a mark of respect, statue is located at his
birthplace in Gujarat. The statue is designed by Ram V. Sutar. The
total amount for the project is US $430 million. The statue stands
182 metres high, making it the one of the tallest monument in the
world, second to the St. Louis Arch.

Patel won an election to become the sanitation
commissioner of Ahmedabad in 1917. Patel gave
a speech in Borsad in September 1917,
encouraging Indians nationwide to sign Gandhi's
petition demanding Swaraj independence from

the Gujarati arm of the Indian National Congress
