The project work is devoted
to teenagers’ preferences in
reading

genres. The presented table
shows the results of a
survey in which adolescents
were asked about their
favourite book genres.
Reading is an important part of education and
if parents and teachers want to encourage
teenagers to read, they need to know what
kinds of books most appeal to young people.
My project, which I am still working on, is
aimed at finding out what book genres are
popular with teenage boys and girls. I have
found some data on this issue and organised it
in the table below.

The results show that a vast majority
of the participants, that is more than
fifty-five percent, express their
preference for adventure books and
detective, war and spy stories,
whereas the lowest percentage, that
is less than twenty percent is found
among love stories readers. The
survey has also shown that almost
thirty percent of respondents
mentioned stories about sport and
I can identify two main features of the
statistics presented in the table. The
first one is that the majority of
teenagers cited adventure stories as
their favourite book genre, making this
kind of books most popular among
young people. And the second key
feature is that only seventeen point
two per cent of teenagers reported
enjoying reading romances, putting
this genre at the bottom of the table.

little difference between numbers
of readers of adventure books and
detective, war and spy stories. This
can be explained by the fact that
people in their teens are eager to
escape reality, explore something
new and solve mysteries.
Surprisingly, romance books have

point six percent of the surveyed,
which is almost three times less than
adventure stories.
Apart from that, comparing
average in popularity of books
we can conclude that sports
stories is far more popular than
animal stories. The former
comprises forty nine point two
per cent while the latter makes
up only twenty seven point two
per cent.

Nevertheless, it is evident from
the table that the respondents
choose only entertainment books to
read, which is one of the main
problems with reading nowadays. In
order to avoid this problem, it is
crucial both for teachers and
parents to encourage teenage girls
and boys to read classical
literature, thus not only to have fun
but also to learn and to think about
eternal values of humanity, such as
love, friendship and moral ethics.
In my opinion, the statistics in the
table reveal an important problem.
We can see that teenagers are not
interested in biographies and are
therefore missing out on a great
amount of wisdom contained in these
books. I think that in order to solve
this problem biographies should be
included in the school curriculum.

emphasise that reading is an

human life. Moreover, I am
strongly convinced that to be

is reading fun and enjoyable
but it also allows us to learn
about any subject and
improve our analytical and
creative skills.

There are important differences between these pictures. Firstly,

I think both types of books shown in the pictures have their
advantages and disadvantages. Many people, for example, like
the smell and feel of paper books, but on the other hand paper
books can be heavy and hard to carry around. As for electronic
books, they weigh nothing and we can store thousands of them
on one device. On the downside, reading e-books is bad for our
eyes.

These photos work really well for our project as they show that
although life without gadgets is possible and can even be
enjoyable, it requires much more effort: foe example, the girl on
the left had to travel to the library, find the right book, while the
girl on the right got hold of the book she needed with a few

Personally, I would not like to live without gadgets, I use gadgets
for almost everything – from finding information for my school
