This is the place where salt was mined.

3. The foundation of Pokrovsk

On August 16 and 18 a fort was set with 16 salt sheds. The
building was finished on August 28 1747 . This date is the day
of our town foundation.

Peasants were invited to get
and transport salt in carts.
Instead of horses they used
bulls.

5. Pokrovsk

Founded as
Pokrovskaya sloboda
by Ukrainian settlers
in 1747, it was
granted town status
and renamed
Pokrovsk in 1914.

6. Kosakenstadt 

Kosakenstadt
During the reign of Catherine the Great, ethnic
Germans moved there, making it a major center of
the Volga German culture. At that time, the town was
known as Kosakenstadt ("Cossacks' Town").

It became the capital of
the Volga German
Autonomous Soviet
Socialist Republic, now
a part of Saratov
Oblast, in 1924, and it
was renamed Engels in
1931.

11. Lev Abramovich Kassil

A well-known Soviet writer of juvenile and
young adult literature, depicting Soviet life,
teenagers and their world, school, sports,
cultural life, and war lived in Engels since 1905
till 1950. On November 9 1995 the Lev
Abramovich Kassil museum was opened.
