•When the ship is parked in a port or on a roadstead, crew members may be left on the ship at
the order of the captain and during off-duty hours to ensure the safety of the ship, including fire
safety. When berthing in ports, any person of the ship's crew who has the necessary
qualifications may be engaged by the order of the captain to keep watch on the ship after
appropriate rest and instruction.
If an important operation is being performed at the time of
the transfer of the watch, it must be completed by the person
in command who is transferring the watch, unless the
captain has given a different order. Ordinary crew members
who take over the watch must obtain permission to take over
the watch from the watch commander.

The mate on the watch shall not transfer the watch to the mate on duty
if there is reason to believe that the latter is unable to perform the
duties of the watch properly, in which case he shall notify the captain.
He must personally verify the relationship:
• Watch orders and other special instructions of the master concerning
the navigation of the vessel;
• Location of the vessel, its course, speed and draught;
• Prevailing and pre-calculated tides, currents, weather, visibility, and
the effect of these factors on course and speed;
• Procedures for using the main engines to perform a maneuver if the
main engines are controlled from the bridge;
• Navigation situation;
• The operational status of all navigation and safety equipment that is
used or may be used during the watch;
• Gyro and magnetic compass adjustments;
• The presence and movement of vessels in plain sight, or vessels
that can be expected to appear;
• Conditions and hazards that may occur during the watch;
• Possible influence of roll, trim, water density and increased
precipitation from speed on the water supply under the keel.
