The modern St. Petersburg State University is the successor of the Academic University,
which was established simultaneously with the Academy of Sciences by decree of Peter
I of January 28, 1724 and actually ceased to exist in 1766, being merged with the
Academic Gymnasium into the Academy School no later than 1770.
