TOTAL AREA
Originally, the settlement of Yangna [en]
was located on the site of today's city
(translated from the Tongva language —
"the place of the poisonous oak")[10], in
which about 300 people lived[11]. The
population was engaged in weaving,
canoe construction and fishing. The head
of the settlement was the chief
responsible for the storage of religious
objects, settlement of disputes and
collection of taxes[12]. The belief of the
Indians referred to polytheism[13]. The
Indians spoke dialects of the Takian
language group and belonged to the
Tongva people[14]. In the early 1800s,
they were integrated into the Spanish
mission system. In 1833, as a result of
secularization, the Tongva dispersed
throughout Southern California. Up until
the 1860s, they represented a visible
ethnic community[15].

FOUNDATION
• The history of Los Angeles began in 1781, when 44 settlers from
New Spain founded a permanent settlement on the territory of the
current center of Los Angeles on the instructions of the Spanish
governor of Las California Felipe de Neve and with the permission of
Viceroy Antonio Maria de Bucareli. After the sovereignty of Mexico
passed to the United States in 1848, great changes occurred after
the completion of the Santa Fe railway line from Chicago to Los
Angeles in 1885. Old industries have declined, including agriculture,
oil production, military and aviation, but tourism, entertainment
and high technology remain strong. Over time, droughts and forest
fires have increased in frequency and have become less seasonal
and more year-round, which further strains urban water security

SYMBOL
• The famous sign is located on Mount Lee at
a 490-meter altitude above sea level, and is
securely guarded by a video surveillance
system and motion detectors (when
approaching closer than 45 m, an alarm is

called). But tourists have a chance to
admire the inscription and take a lot of
photos – the best views of the inscription
open from the observation deck of Griffith
Park.
