The theater was founded in 1913 as a
Student Drama Studio, headed by Evgeny
Vakhtangov. We decided to start right away
with the performance - we chose Boris
Zaitsev's play "The Lanins' Estate".
The premiere ended in failure.
After such a disgrace, the directorate of the
Art Theater banned Vakhtangov and the
Studio decided to "go underground." In the
autumn of 1914, the Studio had already
settled in a small apartment in Mansurovsky
Lane.
Since 1917, after coming out of the
"underground", the former Mansurovskaya
became known as the 3rd studio of the
Moscow Art Theater (Moscow Art Theater).
And on September 13, 1920, Vakhtangov's
studio was accepted into the family of the Art
Theater under the name of E.B.Vakhtangov.

In honor of the opening, the "Miracle of St. Anthony" was given. This
day was considered the birthday of the Vakhtangov Theater.

The play "Princess Turandot" based on a fairy tale by Carlo Gozzi is the last
lifetime performance by Evgeny Vakhtangov, staged by him in 1922
and considered a masterpiece of the theater.
