THE STRONGEST EARTHQUAKEThe most serious earthquake in the history
of mankind is considered to be a series of
tremors that occurred off the coast of
Japan on May 11, 2011.The strongest of
them, magnitude 9, recorded at a depth of
30 km, 72 km from the coast of the
archipelago, lasted about 6 minutes and
caused a tsunami over 40 meters high.
3.
.The natural disaster occurred at 8:48 Moscow time, the
epicenter was 373 kilometers northeast ofTokyo, the focus
lay at a depth of 24 kilometers.
The earthquake occurred in the JapanTrench, a deep
ocean trench where the Pacific andOkhotsk lithospheric
plates collide. The oceanic Pacific plate, which is heavier in
this place, is submerged under the continental Okhotsk
plate, above which there is a part of the Eurasian continent
and some Japanese islands. It is assumed that the Okhotsk
Plate in its movement can be considered a part of one of
the 7 largest lithospheric plates – the North American
Plate.
4.
The focus of the earthquake extends from theseaside of Iwate Prefecture to the seaside of Ibaraki
Prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency reports
that this quake may have been caused by movement
in a fault zone from Iwate to Ibaraki with a length of
400 km and a width of 200 km. The analysis showed
that the earthquake is a series of three shocks. It has
been noted that this earthquake may have the same
origin as the major earthquake of 1896, which also
caused a large tsunami.
5.
As a result of the cataclysm, 15883people died, more than 6 thousand
were injured.The whereabouts of
another 2,676 people remain unknown
to this day.The tsunami caused a largescale accident at the Fukushima nuclear
power plant.The total damage caused
to the Japanese economy is estimated
at $186-235 billion.
