History
The history of Brown University begins in 1764. Three
residents of the city of Newport (Rhode Island) made a
petition to the General Assembly of the colony
demanding the organization of an institute or college.
In this college there weren’t any
restrictions on the admission of
students on the basis of religion,
even though the first president of
the college was the Baptist minister

Name
The name of the university is associated
with the philanthropic work of Nicholas
Brown Jr., who regularly made large
donations to Rhode Island College. In 1804
the university changed its name to Brown
University as a token of gratitude.

Brown University was the first in the Ivy League
who develop a qualified engineer program. Since
in 1847 the most talented engineers in the
country began to leave the walls of this
university.
In 1969 the entire BU education system was
reformed.
There was a complete cancellation of all basic
courses and the student himself was able to
compose the course of study he needed.

Emblem
The Brown University coat of arms is the assumed
heraldic achievement of Brown University. The
achievement in its current iteration was adopted in
1834.
The blazon of the achievement is Argent, a cross
gules between four open books of the first, bound
of the second. Crest: a demi-sun issuant radiant or
through clouds argent.
