Types
A high-voltage switch is a device used to turn off
high-voltage electric current. It can be used as
part of a high-voltage electrical network, to
protect equipment or to transmit electricity.
Types:
● Air-Insulated High circuit
breakers
● Low-gas high-voltage circuit
breakers
● Oil high-voltage circuit breakers
● Vacuum high voltage circuit
breakers

Principle of operation
Circuit Breaker
The principle of operation of a high-voltage
DC circuit breaker schematically looks like
this:
1) The contacts open, resulting in the
formation of an electric arc;
2) Further, there is a limitation of the
process of current rise;
3) Then, there is a decrease in the current in
the circuit to indicators that provide
spontaneous decay of
the arc due to the ionization of the gap;
4) Then there is a process of restoring the
strength between the contacts.

Air-Insulated High
circuit breakers
Air-insulated high voltage switches
use air as the insulation medium. They
are typically used in outdoor
applications, such as substations and
power transmission lines.

Gas–fired high-voltage
breaker
Gas–fired high-voltage switches are
operational control devices for
monitoring a high-voltage
power supply line.
These devices have a very similar
design to oil ones, but at the same
time, they use not an oil mixture, but a
combination of gases to extinguish the
arc.

Oil breaker
An oil switch is a switching device
designed to turn on and off highvoltage power circuits and
electrical equipment both under load
and without it. This process of
breaking an electrical circuit
is performed by a switch due to the
opening of power contacts immersed
in transformer oil because of this, the electric arc
between them is extinguished.

Vacuum high voltage
breaker
Vacuum high voltage switches use a
vacuum as the insulation medium.
They are typically used
in medium voltage applications, such
as motor control centers and circuit
breakers.

In conclusion, each type of high voltage circuit breaker has its
advantages and disadvantages.As technology advanced, high voltage
switches are becoming more intelligent and
interconnected. They are being equipped with sensors, communication
modules, and advanced
control systems, and vacuum circuit breakers are becoming
increasingly popular due to their environmental friendliness.
